Akabanga Hot Sauce
The History of Akabanga Hot Sauce
Akabanga hot sauce is a Rwandan chili oil made using some of the hottest chili peppers in the world. It just has a few simple and natural ingredients, but has grown into one of the most popular hot sauces in the world.
Akabanga comes from a long tradition of sub-Saharan African chili oils often found on local dining tables. One simple yet addictive version was developed by Rwandan food vendor Sina Gerard in the 1980s and became a hit. Akabanga has since become a local staple and its popularity is spreading to more and more countries. Gerard has since used proceeds from Akabanga to build a free community school intended for low income families.
This sauce is so hot that the people preparing it must always wear protective gear! And yet, even moderate spice lovers are becoming fans of Akabanga sauce, thanks to its non-lingering heat and sophisticated taste profile. Most start out with just a single drop, but it’s not long before they are applying Akabanga to everything they eat.
Akabanga roughly translates to “little secret”, but the secret is out now: Akabanga hot sauce is delicious and plays a part in the betterment of Rwandan society.
